A San Mateo County Superior Court judge sentenced a Brisbane woman Friday to a year in county jail and two years of probation for stealing more than $30,000 from her former employer, prosecutors said today.
Sabina Cuago, 51, must also pay restitution to the victim and is prohibited from possessing deadly weapons and ammunition, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
On May 2, Cuago pleaded no contest to felony embezzlement, felony identity theft and felon forgery, prosecutors said.
Between August 2014 and January 2015, Cuago worked as a bookkeeper for Fineline Metals Inc., a metal fabrication shop in Brisbane. During that time, she embezzled money by fraudulently issuing company checks to herself and then entering them into the company computer records as payments to vendors, mileage and reimbursements for expenses, according to prosecutors.
During the six-month period, Cuago stole approximately $30,877 before disappearing in January 2015, prosecutors said.
In July 2015, sheriff’s detectives located Cuago, who told deputies she embezzled the money because of large medical bills and expenses accrued from taking care of her four adult children.
Cuago has a prior theft record from San Francisco and has previously been sentenced to state prison, according to prosecutors.
Cuago’s defense attorney was not immediately available for comment on the case.
