A suspect in the fatal stabbing of a retired San Francisco public defender has been charged with murder and will be arraigned Tuesday, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Angelo Zamora, 20, is being held without bail at San Francisco General Hospital.
Zamora was arrested Friday morning around 11 a.m. by San Francisco police shortly after former public defender Marla Zamora, 65, was found stabbed to death in her home in the 400 block of Arkansas Street in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood.
Public Defender Jeff Adachi said in a statement Friday that Zamora had worked for his office for nearly 30 years before retiring to private practice. He described her as a wonderful person with a heart of gold and a “fearless advocate for her clients”:
“She served as an incredible mentor to so many young lawyers. … Our entire office is heartbroken and will miss Marla dearly.”
Zamora was the defense attorney for Edwin Ramos, who was convicted in a highly publicized triple murder trial in 2012 of the shootings of Anthony Bologna and his sons Michael and Matthew in the city’s Excelsior District in 2008.
The case drew national coverage after it became known that Ramos, who remained in the U.S. on an expired visa from El Salvador, was never reported to federal immigration officials despite multiple contacts with police as a juvenile.
He was sentenced to life in prison for the shootings. Prosecutors said during the trial that Ramos was a gang member and mistook the Bolognas for rival gang members.
