Wet roads linked to teen driver’s death

California Highway Patrol officials said speed and a wet roadway this morning appear to be responsible for a crash in unincorporated San Mateo County that killed a Saratoga teen.

CHP officials received a call at 11:57 a.m. reporting a vehicle down an embankment of southbound state Highway 35 south of Alpine Road.

The officers who responded found a 2015 4-door Audi sedan down the embankment and a boy trapped inside.

CHP officials said it appears the 17-year-old was speeding when he lost control of the car on the wet roadway, veered off the road and hit a tree.

The boy was pronounced dead when he was pulled from the car.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a part in the boy’s death.

CHP officials issued a traffic alert at 12:43 p.m. when they closed both directions of the highway to investigate the crash.

Both directions of the highway reopened at 4:11 p.m.
