Flaming golf cart torches Santa Rosa garage

A golf cart caught fire in the garage of a Santa Rosa home Wednesday afternoon, resulting in an estimated $25,000 in damage to the house, according to firefighters.

Firefighters were dispatched to an address in the 6400 block of Mesa Oaks Lane at 2:20 p.m.

On arrival less than three minutes later they found fire and smoke coming from the doors and windows of a garage attached to a single-family residence.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, and firefighters were able to contain it to the garage. Damage to the rest of the structure was described as “minimal.” Firefighters said that an occupant of the home had heard smoke detectors before finding smoke in the kitchen and opening the door to the garage, where she found the golf cart on fire before exiting the home and calling 911.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
