Santa Rosa police halt potential suicide

Police in Santa Rosa on Wednesday managed to talk down a suicidal man threatening to jump off the roof of a parking structure at the Santa Rosa Transit Mall.

Officers responded at 7:50 p.m. to the structure at 555 First St. on a report of a possible suicidal subject after a city employee located a man sitting on the ledge on the roof of the parking structure.

Police said the man was making suicidal statements and indicated he intended to jump off the ledge and end his life.

Responding officers were able to begin a dialog with the man, identified as a 19-year-old Santa Rosa resident.

A member of the Santa Rosa Police Department Hostage Negotiation Team was able to open a productive dialog with the man and was able to eventually convince him to come down from the ledge, police said.

The man was then evaluated and placed into protective custody for assessment of his mental health.

The transit mall was shut down during the incident.
