Samardzija delivers at plate to sweep Padres

The Giants capped a three-game home sweep of the struggling San Diego Padres Wednesday afternoon after a four-run fourth inning helped them to a 13-9 victory.

Newly-acquired flamethrower Jeff Samardzija (W, 5-2/3 IP, 3-1, 3.86 ERA) picked up his second home victory of the season despite struggling through five innings of five-hit, five-run baseball.

Brandon Belt led San Francisco (12-11) with three hits while driving in five, finishing a home run short of the cycle.

Matt Duffy‘s bat stayed hot since moving into third in the batting order. Duffy joined Belt and Hunter Pence in a group of Giants batters with three hits.

Samardzija continued the trend of hot hitting by Giants pitchers with a go-ahead two-run single to break a 4-4 tie in the third inning.

The victory ends the Giants’ 10-game homestand in which they played .500 baseball. They open at Citi Field against the New York Mets Friday with Giants veteran Jake Peavy (1-1, 6.86 ERA) taking the mound against highly-touted Mets rookie Steven Matz (2-1, 5.40 ERA).
