Coast Guard assists injured boater to shore

The U.S. Coast Guard helped rescue a distressed boat in the bay’s waters, south of the Dumbarton Bridge Thursday evening.

Around 7 p.m., the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco responded to a report from the California Highway Patrol of an injured boater aboard a grounded vessel near the bridge, according to Coast Guard officials.

A Coast Guard aircrew responded to the area. A swimmer was then lowered down to the boat.

The injured boater requested the stay aboard the boat until high tide, so he could safely take the boat back to a marina, Coast Guard officials said.

The aircrew lowered a basket filled with a hypothermic blanket, several wool blankets, food, water and a radio to communicate with coast guard officials until the boater could arrive safely to shore.

Coast Guard officials stayed in communication with the boater until the boat was able to make it back to shore around midnight.

Lt. Jason Berger said in a statement:

“All mariners should have blankets and extra food and water aboard your vessel for emergencies.”
