Dillon Beach wildfire contained at 5 acres

A wildfire that burned roughly five acres of grassy sand dunes in the unincorporated Dillon Beach area of Marin County is 95 percent contained, according to a battalion chief.

The fire was reported at 8:02 p.m. Friday in the vicinity of Cliff Street, according to Battalion Chief Bret McTigue with the Marin County Fire Department.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office announced via Twitter at 8:53 p.m. that campers were being evacuated, but firefighters have since clarified that no evacuations occurred.

McTigue said:

“Initially we had an area in Lawsons’s Landing (where they) were ordered to shelter in place, but there were no evacuations.”

That order has since been lifted.

A total of eight fire engines, four water tenders and 25 personnel were working the incident as of 10:30 p.m., according to McTigue.

Firefighters expect to have the fire fully contained by midnight.

No injuries have been reported and no structures have been threatened, McTigue said.

Deputies called the cause of the fire suspicious on Twitter, saying that witnesses reported seeing subjects run from the scene when the fire started.
