Brandon Belt and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a six-year, $79 million contract through 2021, the Giants announced Saturday. Belt will get $8.8 million in 2017, his 2016 $6.2 million contract will stay intact.
The deal had been brewing since fellow Brandon, Crawford, signed his six-year, $75 million contract in November.
The contract solidifies the homegrown Giants infield until at least 2020, which is not something this front office and coaching staff is taking for granted, said his manager Bruce Bochy:
“He’s just one of our guys. So I’m glad this got done. It’s good news for me, I know I’ll have one of the best first basemen out there for the next five, six years.”
Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean added:
“It’s easier said than done, finally from a position player standpoint we have a core group.”
Belt ranks among the top first basemen in the League; he finished second in last year’s Gold Glove race. His .997 fielding percentage ranks first among fellow first basemen.
Belt has posted a .356 OBP or better since his sophomore season and ranked as one of the top offensive first basemen in the league in 2015. He posted a career-high 18 home runs, 33 doubles with a .478 slugging percentage.
“I think I’ve matured and grown over the past five years or so and that a lot of that is due, if not all of it is due to this organization from the top on down.”
Belt added:
“I can’t wait to get back out there and win another World Series.”
