The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at the Sunset Avenue crossing, police said.
The male, a known transient in is mid-30s, was struck and run over by a westbound Union Pacific freight train, police Sgt. Jeff Henderson said.
Police have had multiple contacts with the victim for loitering and camping, Henderson said.
Reports that the victim was chasing his dog have not been confirmed, Henderson said.
