Former Cal quarterback Jared Goff’s impressive pro day performance apparently left head coach Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers wanting to see more, as the team hosted a private workout for the projected first-round pick in Berkeley yesterday.
Along with other Cal wide receivers, Kelly got a second look at the potential candidate the 49ers could elect to spend their No. 7 overall pick on. Kelly and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day were on-hand during Goff’s pro day showcase in which he completed 61-of-69 passes in front of a contingency of various NFL staff members.
Goff has widely been considered one of the top quarterback’s in this year’s draft, dueling with the North Dakota State product Carson Wentz for the honor.
The Cal Bear’s athleticism, ability to run a spread offense and accuracy have catapulted him up the draft board, while questions about his hand size and ability to translate his game to the pro level while dealing with a more ferocious pass rush has left question marks about his future.
San Francisco’s private workout does not necessarily mean the team is committed to investing their first-rounder in Goff, as the 49ers have met with other candidates as well, including potential first-round pick Shaq Lawson.
The Browns may play spoiler to any plans San Francisco had of nabbing the local kid from Berkeley as well, as they also will host Goff for a private workout according to Fox Sports‘s Alex Marvez, who first broke the news of Goff’s workouts.
While there’s no word on how Goff’s private workout with the 49ers went, the timing of the display could hold significance in the team’s ongoing quarterback drama.
San Francisco has until 1 p.m. on Thursday to either trade or cut former starter Colin Kaepernick. Should the team fail to make a move with the disgruntled veteran, his $11.9 million salary for the 2016 season becomes fully guaranteed.
Although Kaepernick has requested the right to seek a trade from the 49ers, the coaching staff may still be holding out hope to appease the disgruntled former starter by plugging him into Kelly’s system that may play on his athletic strengths.
Quarterback Blaine Gabbert remains in the hunt to maintain his starting job as well, leaving a potential for the 49ers to have three possible starting quarterbacks on the roster next season should they select Goff.
If the 49ers are fully committed to keeping Kaepernick around for this season and beyond, it may skew the team’s likelihood of spending their pick on a quarterback in this year’s draft.
They may instead look to fill some of the other many holes the team has at offensive line (Ronnie Stanley), defensive line ( DeForest Buckner), LB (Miles Jack, Lawson) or even wide receiver (Laquon Treadwell).
