An off-duty San Francisco police officer helped catch an alleged purse-snatcher in Half Moon Bay earlier this month, police said Monday.
The theft occurred on Saturday March 12, when a woman in Half Moon Bay called 911 to report a man had just stolen her purse in the 400 block of Main Street as she was walking on the sidewalk, police said.
An off-duty San Francisco police officer who was in the area witnessed the crime and chased after the suspect on foot.
The officer, who works out of the Mission Police Station, found the suspect hiding behind a tree just east of San Benito Street and detained him, police said.
The suspect had discarded the victim’s belongings during the chase, and she was able to retrieve them.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Francisco Javier Lopez-Rava, a 19-year-old Half Moon Bay resident on suspicion of robbery and carrying a concealed knife.
