Unexploded mortar found near Fort Funston

A woman walking on the beach in San Francisco’s Fort Funston area Sunday evening found a possible explosive device with a metal detector, police said Monday.

The woman was walking on the beach not far from Skyline Boulevard and John Muir Drive with her metal detector just before 7:30 p.m. when she heard it go off, police said Monday.

When the woman dug up the item, she found a suspected mortar and called for help, police said.

An explosives squad responded to the scene and rendered the item safe.
