Inmate brawl locks down Santa Clara jail

A brawl involving roughly 10 inmates broke out in a maximum-security area of Santa Clara County’s Main Jail North in San Jose Thursday afternoon, according to Sheriff Laurie Smith.

The altercation started with just two combatants on the fourth floor around 3:10 p.m., but others quickly joined the brawl – which lasted for roughly 2 minutes, according to sheriff’s officials.

There were an estimated 30 inmates present at the time of the fight. One deputy was in the housing unit when the fight broke out, and a total of five deputies were on the floor.

At least part of the fight was captured on security cameras which were purchased at Costco and had just been installed earlier today. Smith told reporters at a news conference today that she had briefly seen the footage.

“One inmate brushed up against another and then the fight was on,” Smith said. “You could see a lot of fist fighting.” “There was no indication of weapons that were used,” Smith said.

Information about the extent of injuries resulting from the fight was not immediately available, and Smith said medical personnel were still at the scene.

As of shortly after 5 p.m. the jail remained on lockdown.
