HS student ID’d as Richmond homicide victim

A 14-year-old boy fatally shot Monday in Richmond was a freshman at a local high school and was absent the day he was slain by a still at-large suspect, according to police.

Xavier McClanahan, a student at John F. Kennedy High School, was reportedly found suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso on the Richmond Greenway trail on Monday, Lt. Andre Hill said.

Officers initially responded to the 3300 block of Ohio Avenue at 9:22 a.m. when a shooting was picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, Hill said.

Medical responders attempted to stabilize McClanahan after he was discovered, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a male suspect running from the scene, which is near BART tracks and Lovonya DeJean Middle School. Hill said Wednesday morning no suspect had been taken into custody.

Hill confirmed McClanahan was supposed to be in school Monday.

West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Marcus Walton could only confirm that school was in session, but did not offer details on the reason for the boy’s absence.

No further information was immediately available.
