Driver fatally shot on highway may have been targeted

A 40-year-old man died this early morning after his vehicle went down an embankment following a shooting on Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond.

At 1:08 a.m. the CHP Golden Gate Division received a reports of a crash on the highway near Hilltop Drive, according to CHP officials.

Upon arrival, officers found a driver in a silver Jeep SUV that went down an embankment along the highway.

CHP officials believe an unknown suspect vehicle drove alongside the Jeep and fired several rounds into it. The Jeep then drifted across the highway and went down the embankment, overturning several times.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:43 a.m., CHP officials said.

Investigators believe the shooter targeted the victim.

All lanes of westbound Interstate Highway 80 remain closed as of 8:45 a.m. Traffic is being diverted off at Appian Way.

CHP officials estimate the highway should reopen at about 10:30 a.m.
