Vice President Joe Biden will visit the Bay Area on Saturday to discuss the Obama Administration’s new push for a cancer cure in San Francisco and to give the keynote address at the California Democrats State Convention in San Jose.
President Obama tasked Biden, who lost his son Beau Biden to brain cancer last year, with heading up the administration’s new “Moonshot” initiative to cure cancer, committing $1 billion for research into cancer treatment and prevention during his State of the Union address in January.
Biden will participate in a discussion of the initiative at Genentech Hall on the University of California at San Francisco Mission Bay Campus starting at 11 a.m., according to the White House.
After that, Biden will travel to San Jose, where he is slated to give the keynote address at the three-day state Democratic convention at the San Jose Convention Center at 150 W. San Carlos St.
Other speakers at the convention will include former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich, Sen. Barbara Boxer, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Attorney General Kamala Harris, state Democratic officials said.
The convention begins Friday and lasts through Sunday. Biden will deliver the keynote address on Saturday. More than 3,000 attendees are expected.
