Elderly driver allegedly hits pedestrian on sidewalk

Three people were injured when an elderly driver mounted a sidewalk and struck a pedestrian in San Francisco’s Richmond District Thursday afternoon, a fire spokesman said.

The crash happened near the corner of Fulton Street and 46th Avenue at about 2:15 p.m., fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.

He said it’s still not clear why the driver ended up on the sidewalk driving between a building and a San Francisco Municipal Railway Bus. The car hit a pedestrian, sideswiped the building and hit a pole, which caused overhead Muni wires to fall.

The fallen wires prompted an SUV driver to swerve and park, but that vehicle didn’t crash and wasn’t damaged, Baxter said.

The pedestrian, a man in his 20s or 30s, suffered a leg injury and was taken to a hospital. The elderly couple in the car had minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital, Baxter said.

The fire department received multiple reports that the bus had struck both vehicles, but the bus was never hit. Muni staff helped to comfort the people involved and recreate the accident scene, Baxter said.

There were some minor bus delays because of the crash, according to Muni officials.
