Police today confirmed that a suspect in a San Francisco shooting on Valentine’s Day that left two people dead and another seriously injured early Sunday was allegedly previously involved in a Richmond crash with an AC Transit bus that injured nearly a dozen people.
Richard Contreras, 26, was arrested Monday in connection with a triple shooting at the Twin Peaks lookout that occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday, according to San Francisco police.
Two men identified as Santa Rosa residents Julio Peraza, 21, and Rene Mora, 19, were killed in the shooting and a third victim, an 18-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Contreras is being held without bail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, carjacking, being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm, according to police and jail records.
Contreras was also a suspect in a September 2014 crash in Richmond in which the driver of a stolen vehicle collided with an AC Transit bus, Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said today.
That collision caused the bus to slam into a house in the 700 block of 18th Street, badly damaging the home and rupturing a gas line in the area. The crash caused minor injuries to at least 11 people, including a woman and her young daughters who were inside the home at the time of the crash, according to police.
Contreras, who was on felony probation for multiple stolen vehicle offenses and misdemeanor evasion at the time, fled the scene, leaving behind a juvenile passenger, according to Richmond police.
He was later charged in connection with the incident, however, and pleaded guilty to joyriding, hit and run and probation violation charges, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
