Man dies after rescue attempt near Pacifica Pier

A 60-year-old man died after he and a woman were rescued from near the Pacifica Pier on Tuesday afternoon, according to U.S. Coast Guard and fire officials.

The San Mateo County coroner’s office has identified Pacifica resident Larry Moore as the man who fell into the ocean along with the woman around 2 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.

The woman was able to make it back to shallow water and onto the beach but Moore was taken out into the ocean and was not readily visible from shore, North County Fire Authority officials said.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew was able to locate Moore and a rescuer was lowered into the water to hoist him up to be flown to shore, fire officials said.

He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The woman was also hospitalized for further evaluation and treatment, fire officials said.
