Body of missing BASE jumper recovered

A body recovered over the weekend near Bixby Bridge in Big Sur has been identified as 42-year-old Rami Kajala of Finland, one of two trained jumpers missing since last month, Monterey County sheriff’s officials said today.

Kajala and Mary Katherine “Katie” Connell jumped off of the bridge on the morning of Jan. 20 and deputies didn’t learn they were missing until Jan. 23 while investigating an abandoned rental car connected to the pair, sheriff’s Cmdr. John Thornburg said.

They are BASE jumpers who leap off of four types of objects building, antenna, span or earth — then deploy a parachute to land, according to Thornburg.

Connell, a Ventura woman in her mid to late 20s, has not been found, Thornburg said.

It appeared Kajala was able to safely land and tried to save Connell, but ended up in the water, according to Thornburg.
