Officer assaulted during traffic stop

A San Leandro police officer was assaulted during a traffic stop Monday afternoon after a second vehicle pulled up behind the patrol car, police said today.

The stop occurred after an alleged traffic violation around 2 p.m. in the vicinity of International Boulevard and 106th Avenue.

Before the officer made contact with the vehicle being stopped, an unrelated car pulled up behind the patrol vehicle. Two suspects got out and approached the officer in a hostile fashion, according to police.

They identified the driver of the stopped vehicle as a family member and demanded to know why the officer initiated the traffic stop.

A 20-year-old Concord woman identified as Miranda King approached the stopped vehicle despite commands from the officer not to interfere. When the officer grabbed King, she allegedly tried to kick him in the groin several times, police said.

The other suspect, identified as 22-year-old Deonte Spencer from Brentwood, “began to yell expletives” and allegedly ran at the officer “with his fists raised in a threatening manner,” according to a statement from police.

The officer struggled with King while attempting to defend himself from Spencer until backup arrived and both suspects were arrested.

They were both arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. In addition, Spencer was arrested on suspicion of interfering with King’s arrest.
