Grandmother arrested for allegedly drowning 4-year-old

A woman has been arrested after her young grandson drowned in a bathtub under suspicious circumstances Tuesday morning in Fairfield, police said today.

Dispatch received a call at 10:51 a.m. indicating that a 4-year-old boy had drowned in the 1400 block of Jefferson Street.

Efforts to resuscitate the boy were unsuccessful, according to police.

The child was in the care of his 51-year-old grandmother Dawn Diana Raines-Hewes, who investigators allege placed the child in a bathtub and intentionally drowned him.

Two other grandchildren under Raines-Hewes’ care, a 1-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl, were not harmed, police said.

Raines-Hewes has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail. The case remains under investigation and information about any possible motive is not currently being released.
