Christmas drive-by injures woman, child

A woman suffered a grazing gunshot wound in Richmond Friday night when someone opened fire at an occupied vehicle, according to investigators.

Police received a Shotspotter alert in the 600 block of Florida Avenue indicating that 18 shots had been fired around 10:50 p.m.

Responding officers determined that a vehicle occupied by five people, including a 2-year-old girl, had been struck by eight or nine bullets when a someone in an unknown suspect vehicle opened fire.

A woman inside suffered a grazing wound that was not considered life-threatening, according to police, and the 2-year-old girl suffered minor injuries from broken glass. Initially, however, the victims thought she had been shot, according to police.

The driver sped off toward a hospital, but they were intercepted by an officer responding to the scene of the shooting. The injured girl was placed in the patrol car and transported to a hospital, police said.

Investigators say that they have not yet determined a motive in the shooting, and that there is no suspect information available at this time.
