A flight Wednesday morning from Oakland International Airport to Chicago’s Midway International Airport landed safely back in Oakland after concerns about the plane’s landing gear, fire officials said.
Southwest Airlines Flight 2547 landed safely at about 10:15 a.m.
The fire department responded with one truck and four engines to the airport in case the plane caught on fire when it landed, a fire dispatcher said.
The plane took off at about 6 a.m. but turned back because of the apparent landing gear issue. It was in a holding pattern for a few hours to burn off fuel, Southwest officials and Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.
The flight had 139 passengers on board and the captain in command decided to turn back after taking off because of the maintenance issue, Southwest officials said.
