A 17-year-old boy in a car crash Monday morning south of Gilroy after the vehicle he was driving sideswiped another vehicle and then struck a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The male teen, a resident of Tres Pinos, an unincorporated community in San Benito County, was driving north on Bolsa Road north of Bloomfield Avenue around 8:15 a.m. at around 60 miles per hour when the crash occurred, the CHP said.
His vehicle, a 1988 Chevrolet, drifted across the double-yellow lines and sideswiped a southbound 2002 Nissan driven by a 31-year-old Gilroy woman, the CHP said.
It then continued across the southbound lane and off the road, hitting a tree before coming to a rest at the bottom of an embankment.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was uninjured.
Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The boy’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the CHP said.
