Monterey beach reopened after bacteria levels subside

The public can take a dip in the water at Monterey Municipal Beach Thursday after county environmental health officials determined elevated bacteria levels there have subsided.

On Tuesday, Monterey County health officials posted an advisory at the beach after water samples taken the day before showed high levels of bacteria, which can put people at a higher risk for illness.

Other samples taken since then have shown bacteria levels decreased to a level that meets state regulations for recreational water contact, according to county health officials.

Bacteria can come from marine animals, rainfall runoff, storm drains and human activity, county health officials said.
