San Francisco police are looking into whether one of their officers was intoxicated when he allegedly struck two pedestrians in North Beach and then fled the scene early Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.
Christopher Kohrs, 38, a seven-year veteran of the department who is known as the “Hot Cop of the Castro,” is accused of the hit-and-run reported at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday at Broadway and Montgomery Street, police said.
The pedestrians, two men in their 40s, were crossing Broadway when a Dodge Charger traveling west struck them, police said. They were taken to a hospital, where they remain today with injuries considered serious but not life-threatening.
The Dodge driver fled, leaving the car behind. Investigators identified Kohrs, the registered owner of the car, as the driver. He turned himself in at police headquarters late Sunday morning, police spokesman Officer Michael Andraychak said.
Andraychak said part of the police investigation is “to look into the sobriety of the driver.” He was booked into county jail on suspicion of two counts of felony hit-and-run. He has since posted bail and is no longer in custody.
Kohrs is currently on unrelated medical leave. If he becomes eligible to return to duty, he will then be suspended pending further investigation, Andraychak said.
Kohrs gained social media fame during his time patrolling the gay-friendly Castro District. A Facebook page dedicated to him has more than 52,000 followers.
