Suspect arrested in muralist’s murder

Oakland police Monday announced an arrest in the September murder of artist Antonio Ramos, who was shot while working on a community mural project in West Oakland.

The case has been taken to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for review. Police said they will release the suspect’s name once formal charges have been filed, which they expect will happen Tuesday.

Antonio Ramos, a 27-year-old Emeryville resident, was shot around 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 29 in the 3500 block of West Street. He was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Ramos was working on a 4,000-square-foot mural under the Interstate Highway 580 overpass between 35th and 36th streets.

The West Street mural, organized by the community group ArtEsteem, is part of the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project, an ongoing collaboration between artists and Oakland students. It was designed by students from West Oakland Middle School through the art education organization Attitudinal Healing Connection.

Work continued on the mural despite Ramos’ death, and the completed work was unveiled on Oct. 21.
