Driver dies fleeing CHP in high-speed chase

One person was killed Tuesday morning in San Jose during a high-speed pursuit with the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on the Winchester Boulevard off-ramp from Interstate Highway 280, CHP officials said.

At 3:29 a.m., officers got involved in a high-speed pursuit with a white Honda Accord that was fleeing the Gilroy area, according to the CHP.

As the driver fled from officers, he drove at speeds in excess of 100 mph and was swerving in and out of traffic.

The Accord led officers onto Highway 280, where the driver tried to exit at Winchester Boulevard, lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

The vehicle went airborne and rolled at least once before coming to a stop just off the off-ramp, officers said.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A passenger in the Accord was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Officers said the vehicle involved in the pursuit was reported stolen out of Los Gatos.

One officer suffered minor injuries when a patrol vehicle involved in the pursuit crashed into a road sign, according to the CHP.
