Van Ness closes Friday for hospital construction

Construction of a new underground pedestrian tunnel for a hospital project will cause the closure of a portion of busy Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco from early Friday until late Sunday.

The new tunnel, located under Van Ness between Geary and Post streets, will connect the under-construction California Pacific Medical Center campus on the west side of the thoroughfare with medical offices on the east side, according to Miquel Penn, a spokesman for the hospital’s general contractor HerreroBOLDT.

The street closure begins on Friday just after midnight and continues until 11:59 p.m. Sunday. It is the third and final 72-hour closure of Van Ness Avenue associated with the construction of the pedestrian tunnel, Penn said. The previous two closures occurred in April.

Crews will work through the weekend to remove the temporary panels over the tunnel and restore the street surface to its original, pre-construction state.

Only emergency vehicles and public transit vehicles will be allowed to travel on Van Ness between Geary and Post streets, with all southbound traffic being rerouted to Gough Street and all northbound traffic being rerouted to Franklin Street.

Pedestrians and local traffic will still be able to access buildings on Van Ness Avenue between Pine and Ellis streets during the closure but should expect significant delays in the area.

The 274-bed CPMC hospital is expected to open in mid to late 2019.
