Pedestrian identified in fatal Walnut Creek crash

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office today identified a woman who was struck and killed by a driver Monday morning in Walnut Creek as 56-year-old Maya Karmanova.

Walnut Creek police are investigating why the motorist allegedly ran a red light when he struck the pedestrian.

Karmanova, a Walnut Creek resident, was struck at 7:50 a.m. as she used a crosswalk at Treat Boulevard and Candelero Drive, according to police Lt. Lanny Edwards.

She was taken to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead there at 9:15 a.m., Edwards said.

Edwards said the driver, a 44-year-old man from Manteca, ran a red light. He was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation, police said.

Edwards said the driver has not been taken into custody, since drugs or alcohol were not suspected as factors in the incident, pending toxicology test results.

Investigators are also looking into whether the driver was texting on his phone at the time, among other possible factors, Edwards said.
