San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford grabbed his first Rawlings Gold Glove Award Tuesday evening, capping Braves’ acrobatic shortstop and fellow nominee Andrelton Simmons‘ two-year reign.
Crawford finished the 2015 season with a .979 fielding percentage — with a little help from middle-infield partner in crime Joe Panik — with a career-high 89 double plays. The All-Star dazzled with highlight-worthy stops but was as reliable as ever this season, recording 20 defensive runs saved above the league average. He committed a career-low 13 errors.
Though he trailed Simmons in fielding percentage, double plays turned and defensive runs allowed above league average (25), Crawford ranks first among all defensive players in the National League on the SABR Defensive Index. The list is calculated based on the batted-ball location, “defensive runs saved,” “ultimate zone rating” and “runs effectively defended.”
Three other Giants were nominated for Gold Gloves: Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Matt Duffy, whose Rookie of the Year nomination will have to wait another week, though none grabbed any hardware this time around. Posey lost out to eight-time winner at catcher Yadier Molina. Belt fell to NL MVP nominee Paul Goldschmidt and Duffy lost to freak-of-nature Nolan Arenado.
