Police: Driver ran red light before killing pedestrian

A driver allegedly ran a red light Monday morning before he struck and killed a 56-year-old woman in Walnut Creek, according to police.

The collision occurred at 7:50 a.m. on eastbound Treat Boulevard at Candelero Drive, near the Pleasant Hill BART station, according to Walnut Creek police Lt. Lanny Edwards.

The pedestrian, a Walnut Creek resident whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m., police said.

Police said the driver, a 44-year-old man from Manteca, ran a red light before striking the woman as she used the crosswalk. The man then collided with another car, police said.

The man, who was not injured, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Edwards said.

There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision, Edwards said.

Eastbound Treat Boulevard, a main thoroughfare in Walnut Creek, was closed from Cherry Lane to Bancroft Road until 1:05 p.m.
