Two teens killed in Contra Costa crash

The California Highway Patrol has confirmed two teenage girls were killed early Sunday morning in a crash in unincorporated Contra Costa County.

The crash occurred on Franklin Canyon Road, just east of McHarry Ranch Road, according to the CHP.

The single-vehicle crash was first reported at 2:53 a.m. The vehicle was traveling on eastbound Franklin Canyon Road when it veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

The victims were 15 and 16 years old and were from Martinez, according to the CHP. They were passengers in the vehicle.

The driver, a 16-year-old from Pleasant Hill, suffered major injuries in the crash. She told investigators she was driving about 60 mph when she may have fallen asleep.

It does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.
