At 10:48 p.m., dispatchers received a report of an unknown object, possibly a body, blocking the highway’s southbound lanes, just south of the Third Street off-ramp, according to the CHP.
Shortly after, officers learned two vehicles were involved in a collision, and at least one of the vehicles’ occupants had sustained major injuries, CHP officials said.
The CHP issued a Sig-alert for the southbound lanes in the area just before 11 p.m., as emergency crews responded to the scene.
The southbound lanes will be closed for an extended period, CHP officials said.
Drivers traveling south on Highway 101 will be redirected to use the Third Street exit and continue onto Bayshore Boulevard through South San Francisco to renter southbound Highway 101, according to the CHP.
Drivers can also use southbound Interstate Highway 280 to Interstate Highway 380 to renter southbound Highway 101, CHP officials said.
