Drone crash causes 1-acre grass fire

A drone caused a grass fire that burned an acre of grass Sunday morning at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, a department of public safety spokesman said Wednesday.

Around 10:40 a.m., crews responded to a report of a fire at the park at 999 E. Caribbean Drive, public safety Capt. Jeffrey Hunter said.

Firefighters arrived about 10 minutes later and extinguished the blaze shortly before 11 a.m., Hunter said.

The drone’s owner suspected the device or its battery gave off heat and started the blaze after it crashed in a field, according to Hunter.

Breezy conditions and the dry grass contributed to the fire’s spread, he said.

No injuries were reported.
