Warning shot lands alleged shooter in jail

A 59-year-old man was arrested after allegedly firing a shot during an altercation in Newark late Friday night, according to police.

Officers responded at 10:57 p.m. Friday to reports of gunshots heard and found a victim who reported being in a verbal and physical altercation with the suspect in front of a home in the 37000 block of St.

Mary Street, police said.

The suspect, a Newark resident whose name was not immediately available, then allegedly shot at the victim, who was not hit by the gunfire, police said.

After police surrounded the home, the suspect exited into the backyard and eventually surrendered to officers in front of the residence, according to police.

A records check revealed the suspect is a previously deported felon. He admitted to firing a single round into the air after the altercation with the victim, police said.

The suspect said he didn’t know where he discarded the weapon.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the home and numerous firearms were found inside, according to police.

The suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of negligent discharging of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, police said.
