San Francisco fire officials said they responded to a gas leak in the city's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood Tuesday morning.
A PG&E crew is working to shut off a one-inch gas line that was struck by a construction crew using a jackhammer in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood Tuesday morning, a PG&E spokesman said.
The gas line break at 1427 Haight St. between Masonic and Ashbury streets was reported at 10:37 a.m., according to fire officials.
The reporting party was evacuating the area and PG&E has been called to the scene, fire officials said.
The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management posted a message on Twitter at 11:04 a.m. warning residents to avoid the area, and followed with a message noting that construction crews were evacuating the intersections “due to a report of cutting thru a gas line.”
PG&E spokesman Nick Smith said a construction crew working in the area had the gas lines marked but was using a jackhammer instead of hand tools and hit the line. If they had used hand tools, the rupture would have been easier to avoid, Smith said.
A utility crew is working to stop the gas in the area. No injuries were reported, he said.
