A bed bug infestation at Mitchell Park Library in Palo Alto forced a closure of the library Thursday to allow pest control teams to inspect and treat the building over the next few days, city officials said.
The city was notified today that bed bugs were found on two chairs on the first floor of the library at 3700 Middlefield Road. The area has been cordoned off and the library will close at 6 p.m.
A pest control company will treat the furniture and surrounding surfaces over the next few days, and will return within about a week to ensure the treatment worked.
City officials said that canines with the ability to detect bed bugs through their scent have been called into four of the city’s other libraries as a precaution.
The canines will continue to inspect the libraries on an ongoing basis in the future, city officials said.
A number of library services and events will be held at the Mitchell Park Community Center next to the library.
No closures are expected for that center or the neighboring Ada’s Café.
Anyone with concerns about materials borrowed from the library is being asked to seal the materials in a plastic bag and bring it to any of the city’s libraries.
