Sheriff’s deputies placed a Monterey County school on lockdown Monday afternoon when students spotted a man with a rifle on a neighboring rooftop, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was reported at 1:56 p.m. near the York School, just outside of Monterey on York Road.
Sheriff’s deputies, a bailiff from the courthouse, Monterey police and the sheriff’s air unit responded to the scene, locking down the school, according to deputies.
Emergency responders cleared the parking lot and offices at the nearby Pro Act, a business on the 24000 block of Silver Cloud Court. They determined that the building’s owner had been on the roof with a pellet rifle, “eradicating pigeons.” Deputies said he complied with the investigation and admitted to using the pellet gun. The man was not arrested, deputies said.
