Pedal confusion led to a fatal accident Tuesday morning at a Livermore gym when a car crashed through the doors of the building and into a fitness class.
Police responded to several 911 calls at 6:26 a.m. regarding a vehicle that drove through the glass doors of the LifeStyleRx gym located at 1119 E. Stanley Blvd., injuring five members of a TRX elastic strap resistance training class and killing one, according to Livermore police spokeswoman Officer Traci Rebiejo.
According to Rebiejo, an 80-year-old Livermore resident was attempting to park her car, a Mercedes SUV, when she confused the gas and brake pedals and sent her car crashing forward into the gym.
The six victims of the crash were transported to a hospital. Five suffered moderate but not life-threatening injuries, according to police.
However, a 49-year-old Livermore woman died as a result of the crash, Rebiejo said. Her name was not yet being released by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau.
There were no signs of drug or alcohol involvement, Rebiejo said. No arrests or charges have been made at this time.
LifeStyleRx is a 70,000-square-foot gym and wellness center that is part of the Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare system, according to its website.
