Suspect in construction worker’s freeway death identified

A suspected drunk driver accused of killing a construction worker in a crash on an Oakland highway early Saturday morning was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Santos Andres Pablo-Carillo, 21, was arrested after allegedly crashing into a construction site on westbound Interstate Highway 580 near Lakeshore Avenue just after midnight, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

The crash killed 33-year-old construction worker Miguel Angel Rodriguez Delacruz, an Oakland resident.

Delacruz was working on a paving project on the two left lanes of the highway there. Pablo-Carillo allegedly crashed into the closed construction area, hit Delacruz, then hit a pickup truck and a generator, Wilkenfeld said.

Delacruz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several lanes of the highway were closed until after 7 a.m. while the CHP investigated the crash.

Wilkenfeld said today that Pablo-Carillo is scheduled to appear in court in Oakland at about 2 p.m. to face charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI.
