Disaster response teams with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have been rescuing animals from the Tassajara Fire in Monterey County, Monterey County SPCA officials said this evening.
Teams have rescued three goats, four miniature donkeys, one horse, three dogs, 36 chickens, two rabbits, four cats, and one bird as of 5:15 p.m., the officials said.
SPCA staff has also provided care for 14 chickens and 50 doves whose owners have not been able to return to the area but are safe, SPCA officials said.
The officials are urging residents who are told to evacuate to take their animals with them. The officials are also asking residents to prepare for evacuation before an order comes.
The SPCA website has free information in English and Spanish to help people prepare themselves, their pets and their livestock for a disaster, SPCA officials said.
The website also has a list of hotels and motels that accept pets, the officials said.
