Police label girl’s abduction story a fake

San Ramon police said Wednesday they are no longer looking for a suspect in a reported attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl after learning through follow-up interviews that the incident was fabricated.

Police had said that a man allegedly tried to lure the teen into his minivan at 3:11 p.m. Monday in the area of Davona Drive and Northland Avenue. The incident seemed legitimate during preliminary investigations, police said.

Police said a heavy presence of officers in the area was called on to try identify the suspect and a suspect sketch was released to the media on Tuesday. A reported crime against a child is a top priority for the department, according to police.

However, additional interviews with the alleged victim revealed discrepancies. Police then discovered that the incident never occurred and called off the investigation.

Regardless, the San Ramon Police Department thanked community members for providing information to assist in the investigation.
