Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol are teaming up on Wednesday for a combined effort to clean up Bay Area highways.
Caltrans will hold Litter Enforcement Day cleanups at various locations in Alameda County and Contra Costa County, near bridges, and in some tunnels where Caltrans crews will be actively sweeping, removing graffiti and clearing litter along the roadsides.
According to Caltrans officials, CHP personnel will focus on litter enforcement and educating drivers to cover their loads in order to prevent more litter from accumulating on roads.
Caltrans workers will conduct cleanups on Interstate Highway 880 from the High Street exit to the Interstate Highway 580 interchange in Oakland, and on Interstate Highway 580 from the Foothill/San Ramon Boulevard exit to the Eden Canyon Road exit in Pleasanton.
Crews in Contra Costa County will be on Interstate Highway 680 from the Crow Canyon exit to the Bollinger Canyon exit in San Ramon.
The Bay Area tunnels that will be cleaned up include the Caldecott Tunnel between Oakland and Orinda, the Posey and Webster tubes between Alameda and Oakland, and the Devil’s Slide between Pacifica and Montara.
The toll plazas of the Bay Bridge, Richmond Bridge and San Mateo Bridge will also be occupied by Caltrans workers that are participating in Litter Enforcement Day.
Community members, individuals, organizations, and businesses will also be able to join litter abatement and recycling activities this week and into the weekend, Caltrans officials said.
