Crews are still trying to assess the damage from the 62,000-acre Valley Fire, which has killed a 72-year-old woman, injured four firefighters and burned at least 585 homes as well as hundreds of other structures, Cal Fire said Monday.
The incident started Saturday afternoon around 1:25 p.m. in the vicinity of 8040 High Valley Road near Cobb, in unincorporated Lake County.
By Sunday morning the fast moving blaze had grown to 40,000 acres, and officials said today that the fire has spread to Napa and Sonoma counties as well. The cause remains under investigation.
Cooler temperatures and increased humidity helped firefighters achieve 10 percent containment on the blaze today, but Cal Fire officials don’t yet know how long the Valley Fire will burn before they have it fully contained.
There are roughly 1,800 firefighters on scene, according to Cal Fire, and additional crews and equipment are being assigned to critical areas on the fire line as they arrive.
In Napa County, an evacuation advisory has been issued for Pope Valley and parts of Angwin.
Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued along parts of state Highway 29, state Highway 53, state Highway 175, state Highway 281 as well as all of Bottle Rock and High Valley roads, according to Cal Fire.
Evacuation orders have also been issued for Butts Canyon Road from Highway 29 all the way to the Napa County Line, including Berryessa estates.
The communities of Twin Lakes, Hidden Valley Lake, Middletown, Aetna Springs, Seigler Canyon and Loch Lommond have also been evacuated, Cal Fire said.
Evacuation centers have been established in Kelseyville, Calistoga, and Clearlake.
Road closures have been imposed at Highway 29 and Bottle Rock Road, Highway 29 at Highway 175, Butts Canyon Road at Aetna Springs Road, Highway 29 at Red Hills Road, Highway 29 at Highway 53, Highway 29 at Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, Soda Bay Road at Riviera West Drive, Highway 29 at Highway 281, and Highway 29 and Live Oak.
