Hundreds of structures have been destroyed by the 50,000-acre Valley Fire, which started Saturday afternoon south of Clearlake and is now burning in Napa and Sonoma counties, according to Cal Fire.
Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said the fire started near Cobb, in unincorporated Lake County, and hit the communities of Middletown and Hidden Valley Lake particularly hard.
The fire initially pushed toward the southeast, but began moving north today, according to Berlant.
Although it’s too early for an exact count, Berlant confirmed via Twitter that hundreds of structures have been destroyed.
There’s been some light rain and temperatures have cooled slightly, but neither of those conditions appears to be a factor in the firefight, Berlant said.
Berlant urged residents to gather any medications and other emergency supplies they’d need in the event of an evacuation:
“If you live in this region, even if you’re not under mandatory evacuation, you have to be prepared.”
He added that people should get their supplies now:
“That way if the fire does change gears, change directions, you can evacuate quickly.”
Four Cal Fire firefighters who were part of a helicopter crew were injured Saturday. The firefighters suffered second-degree burns, but are in stable condition at the University of California at Davis Medical Center, according to Berlant.
More than 1,000 firefighters are fighting the fire and getting people evacuated from the area. Fire officials said the fast-moving wildfire is still zero percent contained as of 4:10 p.m. today.
