Baby spinach recalled over cadmium levels

A Salinas company has voluntarily recalled one lot of its organicgirl brand baby spinach because of elevated levels of cadmium, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The CDPH made the announcement Friday. The packaging on the spinach has a “use by” date of Sept. 13 and the lot code is B030298-001B08S, health officials said.

The officials said people cannot get acutely ill from the elevated levels of cadmium, but long-term consumption of the heavy metal can affect a person’s kidneys, liver and immune system.

The recalled spinach is packaged in plastic, five ounce containers with labels on the top and bottom, health officials said.

Anyone who bought the spinach should discard it right away, according to health officials, and those who find the spinach for sale are asked to call the CDPH at (800) 495-3232.
