Oakland officer fatally shoots alleged attacker

A suspect has been fatally shot after allegedly attacking an Oakland police officer with a metal object Thursday morning, a police spokeswoman said.

The shooting was reported at 8:36 a.m. in the area of MacArthur Boulevard and Van Buren Avenue.

A female officer responded to the area on a report of an assault and contacted the suspect, a man who struck her multiple times to the head and face with the metal object, Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson said.

The officer fired her service weapon, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Watson said. The suspect’s name was not immediately being released.

The officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for head trauma, according to Watson. She did not release the condition of the officer.

Streets in the area have been cordoned off this morning while police investigate the shooting.
